Cops mum on spy boss death
POLICE and the family of murdered former Rwandan spy boss Patrick Karegeya are remaining silent on investigations into his killing.
Karegeya was found dead in the Michelangelo Towers Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, last week. He is believed to have been strangled.
Reports emerged yesterday that three men with alleged links to the killing were being questioned by Mozambican authorities after they were tipped off that the men were hiding out at a Maputo hotel. They are still in custody. Three others are on the run.
Private investigator Chad Thomas of IRS Forensic Investigations said his sources had verified the men had been taken in for questioning and that one was allegedly linked to previous attempted assassinations of Rwandan opposition members in exile.
Karegeya’s nephew, David Batenga, said: “We do not want to divulge too much as we might jeopardise the investigation.”
Many cases involving threats against Karegeya had been opened with the SA Police Service, he said.
“Evidence has been gathered and is being investigated by the Hawks. It is one of the reasons why he was under protection at one point,” he said.
Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said the investigation team was exploring all avenues.
