Thompson and Harris toast of weekend action

- Alvin Reeves reevesa@timesmedia.co.za

BRETT Thompson scored two centuries for Maritime Old Grey and SA Home Loans’ veteran seamer Ryan Harris took seven wickets to lead their respective teams to victories in NMB Premier League cricket matches at the weekend.

On Saturday, Thompson smashed 162 in Old Grey’s total of 355 for five against Buco Uitenhage while Riki Wessels added 63 and Ettienne Potgieter an unbeaten 47.

Uitenhage could only manage 196 in reply with slow bowler Juan Harker taking three wickets to give Old Grey a 159-run victory.

Yesterday, Thompson and Sean Adair both made tons as Old Grey romped to a sevenwicket triumph over NMMU2 at the campus. Chasing 242 for victory, Old Grey raced home with more than 10 overs to spare.

On Saturday, Harris returned a remarkable careerbest of seven wicket for 11 runs in six overs as Despatch were rolled for a paltry 63 to hand Union a 156-run win.

Earlier, opener Aveshan Moodaley made an aggressive 70 while Trevor Young added 30 to help see the log-leaders to 219 for seven.

The league could well be decided this weekend when the powerful Mecer NMMU1 are back in action for a mouth-watering fixture against pace-setters Union.

NMMU1 have games in hand, but, with all things being equal, Union have a three-point lead over the defending champions.
