THE DA welcomed more than 50 former ANC members in Westville near Joe Slovo yesterday in a packed community hall.

The ward 41 community members were welcomed into the party by constituency leader Donald Lee, who praised them for “walking away from Zuma’s ANC”.

Almost 100 Westville community members crammed into the hall, singing and dancing as the new members threw their ANC T-shirts into boxes in exchange for DA ones.

They excitedly filled in their forms and put on their T-shirts.

Welcoming them into the party, Lee said it was a new beginning for them.

“Today is the dawn of the new life. You are walking away from Nkandla and walking into the good things the DA stands for.”

Westville resident Nobathembu Maselwa, who was one of those welcomed into the DA, said she had been a loyal member of the ANC all her life but she had not seen any positive change in her area.

“We do not have access to the most basic of services. We have no toilets, electricity or jobs in this area. It is time for a change.”

Meanwhile, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille will visit Nelson Mandela Bay northern areas and Uitenhage tomorrow.

She will be at the Chatty Community Hall at 11am and the Rosedale Recreation Hall in Uitenhage at 2pm.
