Chiefs falling behind

Goalless draw against Wits a blow to Amakhosi’s league title hopes

-

play for Wits to clear. The Chiefs bench knew instantly that it was now Sundowns’ title to lose.

The Clever Boys were without a doubt the better side in the first half, S’thembiso Ngcobo twice coming close to giving his team the lead when his shot in the 15th minute was pushed for a corner kick by Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

The in-form forward was again unlucky to see his 39th-minute header shave the crossbar in a moment when Khune had little to no clear vision of the in-swinging corner kick from Jabulani Shongwe.

Wits are out of the title race but they threw all they could at Amakhosi, putting in a performance worthy of Premier League contenders.

In last night’s other match, Lamontville Golden Arrows may have woken up late to their relegation troubles, but they gave themselves a glimmer of hope when they beat SuperSport United 1-0 at Princess Magogo Stadium.

On a night when he should have had a hat-trick, Bongi Ntuli scored the winner 18 minutes before full time after controlling a mishit Chris Katongo shot and firing in from close range.

But the win was not without its nervous moments, chief of which being Sibusiso Khumalo’s shot that hit the upright two minutes from time.

It means the fight to avoid automatic relegation will go down to the wire, as Arrows took themselves to within three points of Free State Stars, who have two games in hand.

Stars need six points from their last four games to ensure they do not get the chop, whereas Arrows need them to drop nine points.

But Arrows have to win their remaining two games against AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates.
