Fans revved up for Super Saturday

Round three of the national Super Series means great excitement for petrolheads

- Bobby Cheetham

ROUND three of the national Super Series will be held at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth next Saturday. There will be plenty of action – and top of the list will be Engen Xtreme’s Audis – but let’s not forget other events that will give petrolheads a full day of fun and excitement.

The Engen Volkswagen Cup started with the original Polo Classic in 1997 and Iain Pepper was one of the first drivers to commit to the new “one make” concept of racing.

Going into round three of the Engen Volkswagen Cup, the PG Glass/ Pepper Racing squad of Tasmin Pepper and Trevor Bland are among the favourites to win.

Tasmin scored a classy win at Killarney in March, her second in the series, and lies fifth in the championship.

Last year, Port Elizabeth wasn’t kind to the 23-year old but now she is aiming to repeat her Cape Town performance.

Bland is two places back, but holds second place in the Masters Cup, a championship within the championship for drivers over 27.

‘ (This) is Moss’s first chance to compete in front of his home crowd

Back to the main event, local aces Michael Stephen (A1) and Simon Moss (A38) will aim to put on a good show for supporters in their Engen Xtreme team’s Audis.

It will not be an easy race day for the pair in the Bridgestone Production Car Championship, as championship rules could play a significant role on the day.

Stephen, defending champion in this series, knows a good qualifying session could work to his fa- vour in the first race – but must start from the back of the grid in race two as he is now the championship leader after the second round of the season.

Super Series round three is Moss’s first chance to compete in front of his home crowd. This is his first season in the Bridgestone Production Car Championship and he has faced a learning curve every step of the way.

But Scribante is where he and Stephen have put in all the testing and training sessions.

The Dunlop Eastern Cape Historic Series also sees its second round at the track. This local series was invited to be part of the National Super Series with both rounds in Port Elizabeth and East London being televised.

Graham Lessing leads the standings after the first round in his Green Park Lodge Ford Cortina, but there are sure to be chasers.

With drivers racing within their respective classes, then vying for the overall win for the day, it will make for interesting strategies being played out.
