Plett in line for top African beach award
OFTEN tagged as South Africa’s playground for the rich and famous, Plettenberg Bay stands the chance of being named Africa’s leading beach destination in the World Travel Awards.
Public votes will provide the support Plett needs to walk away with the top award, beating six other nominees.
The World Travel Awards serve to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry. This is the 21st year of the awards.
“Plett offers a unique experience in that it’s not just a ‘traditional recreational beach’ where people swim and surf – we have an array of activities on offer,” Plett Tourism media liaison officer Patty Butterworth said.
“We have a densely populated sea life and other natural wonders to enjoy. Plett has the Tsitsikamma mountains where in winter you can enjoy the snow as well.”
The town offers beach-goers a choice of three Blue Flag beaches, Robberg Beach, Nature’s Valley and Keurbooms.
The beaches are also home to many popular watersports activities, including surfing, scuba diving and snorkelling, sea kayaking, stand-up paddling, and whale and dolphin watching. The rare pansy shell can also be found by wandering one of the beautiful sandy stretches.
“Winning, or even getting in the top three, would be amazing. It would give Plett the great exposure it deserves,” Butterworth said.
The other nominees are Bazaruto in Mozambique, Cape Town, Diani Beach in Kenya, Sharm El Sheikh and Taba Heights in Egypt, and Zanzibar.
