ENERGY and enthusiasm define Jeanette Crossman, principal of Jeanette Crossman Properties.

“It has been said to me that my enthusiasm for my career attracts them to want to work with me – whether they are a buyer or seller,” Crossman said. “I am able to show empathy in any given situation involving the sale of a property, whether it is a divorce, death in the family, downsizing or a distressed sale.”

She has truly found her niche in property and loves every minute of her career.

How long have you been in the property market and what did you do before entering the profession?

Since 2003. Before that I worked in insurance as a broker for more than 20 years, followed by a year as a medical aid broker. I loved it and it gave me many of the clients I have today.

What made you decide to become an estate agent?

I used to love matchmaking people, and now I enjoy matching people to property.

What qualifications do you have?

I have a marketing and a public relations diploma and the usual estate agency qualifications.

What is the most frustrating part of being an estate agent?

Convincing the seller that estate agents are worth the commission we earn, and convincing them that the worth of their property is not based on their needs or personal feelings, but on the saying, “what a willing and able buyer is able to pay”.

What was the most satisfying experience that you have had as an estate agent?

When clients recommend me to their friends and family.

What advice would you give to ensure that first-time buyers don’t lose their property when the interest rates go up?

I would recommend purchasing a property for slightly less than what you can get a bond for.

Move or improve: what is the best option?

Each individual situation requires careful consideration.

What is the most expensive house you have ever sold?

R3.5-million.

And the cheapest?

R290 000.

How is the property industry in Port Elizabeth, as compared to the rest of the province?

Clients must realise that although there is an increased activity in the marketplace, with marginal increase in prices of homes, it does not necessarily mean it is a buyer’s market. There are certain suburbs in Port Elizabeth where the demand for homes – particularly near schools – is certainly making it a seller’s market.

In which areas can one find bargains when looking for options to buy?

Lorraine and Sherwood.

Do you give advice on how to obtain a bond?

I refer them to a bond originator.

Buying or renting: which is the better option at present?

If finances allow it, it is better to buy.

Do you feel the property market has turned the corner?

Yes, in Port Elizabeth in particular with the industrial growth in the city.

What do you do to relax?

Read, watch TV and spend quality time with my 14-year-old daughter, Megan.

Tell us a bit about your family.

I miss my six siblings scattered all over the world.
