Past and future top soccer action and sushi king’s roasting

- HELEN CROOKS

IF IT hadn’t been for some idle banter on 5FM, I would have missed out on DStv’s decidedly under-hyped entertainment highlight of the year.

There was singing, there was theatre, there was drama – and most of all a large amount of cash was raised not only for the families of the 96 people who died in the Hillborough Stadium disaster, but also for other Merseyside charities.

The programme in question was the clash between the Liverpool local and Liverpool international legends which was played at Anfield on Monday.

Former greats such as Ian Rush, John Aldrige, Robbie Fowler and, somewhat reluctantly, Kenny Dalglish took to the field, along with celeb substitute, comedian John Bishop, to provide 90 minutes of top-class entertainment which was a real thriller for soccer fans in general, and not just Liverpool fans. Pity then, that there was not much pre-publicity and that a lot of football fans will have missed out on the action.

What fans can look forward to this weekend, is the possible Premier League title-deciding clash between Liverpool and Chelsea which kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.

Otherwise a programme

with plenty of promise, is The Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene Fired up by

Nando’s which will be screened on Comedy Central (122) at 9pm on Monday. Larger-than-life entrepreneur, politician, party starter, reality TV star and sushi king, Kunene is setting himself up for a comedic “roasting” by international comedian Jimmy Carr.

Kunene’s life and works will be “honoured” by a panel of peers, friends, enemies, critics, comics and entertainment personalities namely John Vlismas, Tumi Morake, Jack Parow, Rian van Heerden, PJ Powers, Dineo Ranaka, Somizi Mhlongo and Khanyi Mbau as they line up to subject him to a humorous barrage of praise, criticism, abuse, jokes and downright lies.
