Lively ‘Kaapse Jol’ on way to Bay

Hit musical at Boardwalk for one show next week

- Arts Correspondent

CAPE Town’s famous carnival is coming to Port Elizabeth next weekend in the form of the lively and exuberant Kaapse Jol musical.

The show will be staged on the Boardwalk Vodacom Amphitheatre stage by Cape Town-based Main Events SA.

Kaapse Jol producer Jayson King is no stranger to the Eastern Cape, and Port Elizabeth, as he has staged his other renowned show, The Great Pretenders, here many times.

The Great Pretenders has been running for nearly two decades and salutes singers such as Chuck Berry, Tom Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and Andrea Bocelli.

The Kaapse Jol musical, on the other hand, will take the audience on a thrilling musical journey back to the days when the Capetonian artists performed on the streets using the pavements as their stage and the streetlights as their spotlights.

Songs to be performed, include such favourites as

Abassie se Worsies (referring to a boat that would bring a new beginning and free them from captivity); Hoe Ry die Kaapse

Trein ; Welcome to Cape Town; Klop Klop; and Rosa, a song sung in Dutch and still a firm favourite in Cape Town today.

Evergreen tunes like Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger; Matt Monro’s Portrait of my Love; Gloria Gaynor’s I will Survive; Louis Armstrong’s Hello Dolly; and Nat King Cole’s

Unforgettable will also transport the audience.

Making up the cast will be Sumaya Hendricks, Deeno Abrahams, Gammat Meniers, Ruth Knight, Zurayda Abrahams, Dennis Maart, George Sammi and the Jollers vocal group.

King himself will also be part of the line-up.

Kaapse Jol takes place next Saturday August 9 at 7.30pm.

Tickets at R120 per person are available from Computicket or at the door from 7pm.

The Garden Route, East London and Johannesburg’s

Kaapse Jol were all sold out, so Bay fans would do well to get their tickets in good time to avoid missing the one-night-only show.

Charity organisations may also purchase a minimum of 50 tickets at only R70, which they may then resell at R120 as a fundraising initiative.
