Gymnasts successful at champs
FIVE Port Elizabeth gymnasts did the Bay proud by winning numerous medals at the recent Indo-Pacific Championships held in Sun City.
Bianca Zoonekynd, Candice van Rooyen, Paige Fisher, Dinielle van der Poll and Robyn Scarr all returned with various medals in their different categories.
Zoonekynd, 22, competed in the women’s open category. She won two gold medals for tumbling and individual double mini trampoline, two silvers for individual trampoline and double mini trampoline team.
She also grabbed silver for the syncro trampoline while receiving a bronze for her efforts in the team trampoline event.
“It was fun taking part in the championships. I did all the things I needed to do.” Zoonekynd said.
Van Rooyen, 17, competed in the 17 and over age group and bagged two silver medals for the double mini trampoline team and syncro trampoline events as well as two bronze medals for the individual double mini trampoline and trampoline team events. She also finished a respectable 10th place in the individual trampoline event.
“I really enjoyed taking part in the championships,” Van Rooyen said.
Fisher, the youngest of the medal winners at just 11, won gold in the double mini trampoline event in the 11-12 age group.
“I was so excited when I found out I had won the gold medal,” Fisher said.
Fisher, Van Rooyen and Zoonekynd are coached by Mandy Zoonekynd.
Scarr, an 11-year-old from Gymstars Gym- nastics Club, won a silver medal, also in the 11-12 age group.
Scarr is coached by Jean Viviers from Gymstars and has been a member of the club for four years.
Van der Poll won a bronze medal in the double mini trampoline event in the 13-14 age category.
Van der Poll is coached by Debbie Gordon at Anderson's Gymnastics Club.
