THE Malabar Home for the Aged and the Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre will be the beneficiaries when the Hobie Beach parkrun celebrates its first birthday on Saturday.

“As we celebrate our first birthday we are encouraging our runners to give back to charity,” local director of parkrun, Rosland Wilson, said.

“We have chosen the Mal- abar Home for the Aged because we feel strongly about the aged who have been with us for many years contributing to society but are often so easily forgotten. The Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre because children are the future and toys bring a strong sense of development into their world.

“We are encouraging our runners to bring either a litre of long-life milk or a toy to donate to the respective charities.

“Those bringing toys will run the route with the toys and deposit them in a donation box at the finish.”

The parkrun started in London as the Bushy Park Time Trial with 13 participants in 2004.

Today there are nearly a million runners hitting the road worldwide at 8am every Saturday.

Parkrun entails people getting together for a free timed fun run every Saturday and is open to all ages and fitness levels.

There is no registration fee and participants do not have to belong to clubs but must register online on www.parkrun.co.za/ register and bring along the bar code which will be used to control their times.

Results in each event are processed and booked online after every run.

Each registered runner has an individual page cataloguing the details of each event they have participated in. They are also rated with runners across the globe.
