A SPANISH-STYLE FEAST FOR FOUR

- Louise Liebenberg

THE Bayside Pantry at the Boardwalk is taking diners on a different food journey every month, and this month Spain gets its turn. A new country is featured each month and so, on every Wednesday in August, Spanish cuisine is the centrepiece of the Bayside Pantry buffet. Hubby Salvelio Meyer and I headed to one of the themed dinners last week and, since he is half Spanish, he was impressed to see some of his own Iberian favourites, like patatas bravas, croquetas, spinach with chickpeas and a host of other dishes included. There’s even a paella station where you may choose what you want included in your customised plate. We were hosted by vivacious marketing coordinator Megan Capoto, while head chef Daya Naidoo took us through his carefully researched dishes. There were soups, salads, a tapas counter, hot pots, carvery and desserts to enjoy, including a hearty chorizo and chickpea soup and, drawing on Spain’s South American ties, spicy tortillas and a seriously hot calamari salad! I enjoyed the peppered mackerel, chickpea and boiled egg salad, but did not have any luck extracting the recipe from Daya! Also worth a visit was the romesco station with steak, chicken and brinjal infused in the characteristic Spanish sauce, while the caldereta fish stew, too, was a real treat. Pud-wise don’t miss the “three cities of Spain” cheesecake and churros with chocolate. The Spanish feast costs R149 per person and bookings are on (041) 507-7793.

One reader can win a Spanish buffet dinner for four at the Bayside Pantry, including sangria on arrival. All other drinks are for your own pocket.
