LORD Badger (4-1) showed his class when he won the main event, a MR 89 Divided Handicap, over 1 600m on the Fairview Polytrack yesterday.

The Alan Greeff-trained runner won going away after Greg Cheyne shifted him into top gear with 150m to go. Swedish King (12-1) ran second ahead of Cinderfella (11-2) and Laurie’s Dancer (9-1).

Although any of the 10 runners could win the race, Lord Badger was rewarded for consistency and a close third behind Blaze Of Fire last time.

The runners all had a good break with Stone Pine leading the way. At the 1300m mark Stone Pine was followed by tote favourite Cannon, Swedish King and Cinderfella, with Laurie’s Dancer at the back end of the field.

With 400m to go Swedish King started to put on the pressure and looked the likely winner, but he threw in the towel when Lord Badger came through powerfully 150m from the post to win going away.

Cannon was well placed with 400m to go, but faded steadily.

Lord Badger paid R4,40 a win and his victory was his seventh from 29 starts. He also pushed his earnings to R398 100 for the Evanstan Investments (Pty) Ltd.

Distiller (5-2) was a popular winner in the first leg of the Pick 6 when Fransie Herholdt came flying through in the closing stages to secure the four-year-old filly’s third victory from eight starts.

A much improved Kiwi Island (10-1) ran second, ahead of Dynamo Lady (111) and Summer Solstice (33-1). The Quartet paid R5 942,80.

But the second Pick 6 leg – and first leg of the Jackpot – was not so kind to punters as 14-1 outsider Frosted Flakes won going away over 1 600m with Herholdt once again in brilliant form for the Yvette Bremner yard.

Frosted Flakes opened at 16-1 and shortened slightly to 14-1 at the off. This was also her first win from 22 outings for owner Hassen Adams. The five-year-old daughter of Spectrum paid R15 for a win and R3.40 a place, and gave the Jackpot a solid start.

The victory of 12-1 shot Take Off in Race 7 rubbed more salt into the wound and resulted in the Jackpot paying R15261.60, while only 9,69 tickets went through to the last leg of the Pick 6.

In the end 99 per cent was won with R3 427 being carried over.

Take Off paid R14,30 a win and with Do You Dance (91), Bride’s Dowry (12-1) and Deepo (22-1) completing the Quartet, this exotic paid a handsome R38 311,30.

Herholdt and Cheyne each rode two winners while trainers Bremner and Greeff also walked away with a double apiece.
