Kareedouw in deserved win

Tough fight against Ithembelihle brings victory at Linkside event

-

KAREEDOUW Academy took the rugby honours in the Linkside Sports Festival at the weekend, scoring a hard-earned win over Ithembelihle in the final.

The rugby matches were limited to 20 minutes and it was a case of taking your chances when they happened.

This Kareedouw achieved with two quick tries against Ithembe and they then held on for a 10-7 win.

Earlier, Ithembe had advanced to the final with tough wins over Bergsig (7-0), Patterson (5-0) and Paul Sauer (26-0). The Academy team defeated Olympia (8-0) and Paul Sauer (17-0), while drawing with Paterson 0-0.

The Ithembe Caltex development side won the U15 rugby section against Linkside (25-0).

The soccer honours went to Strelitzia, who won the penalty shootout after a 1-1 result against Ithembe.

Kabega Christian took the U16 title in a shootout against Linkside.

Westering v Cillie

HOSTS Westering survived a secondhalf scare to edge Cillie 22-19 in a hard-fought schools match at Westering on Saturday.

The game consisted of contrasting halves, with Westering dominating the first 35 minutes to lead 17-0 at the inter val.

Tries from lock Devin du Plessis, impressive fullback Siphosethu Fayo and centre Lyle Draghoender, who also managed a conversion, ensured Westering had the upper hand.

The second half saw a complete turnaround, with the home side lacking their earlier intensity.

Cillie took full advantage and ran in two quick tries through lock Solomon Jordaan and right wing Jonathan Klein, plus a conversion by flyhalf Dylan Mutsie to get within striking distance. Mutsie converted another try with 15 minutes remaining and Cillie had completed a remarkable comeback to lead 19-17.

But Westering lifted themselves, with strong-running replacement flank Ronald Koll scoring the final try of the match to clinch the game for his team.

Newton Tech v Otto

OTTO du Plessis outplayed the home side Newton Tech in all facets of the game and fully deserved their 10-0 victory on Saturday.

Newton Tech struggled in the set pieces, especially the lineouts, which frustrated them and more basic errors followed.

Otto, on the other hand, were more clinical and did the basics well.

Otto prop Dylan Oliphant had a storming game and scored the only try of the match. Flyhalf Rouchard Andrews converted and added a penalty. Others to shine for Otto were No 8 Charl Wait and flank Michael Beauzec.

For the home side, prop Lulama Mandlakaza, lock Mhlali Tyali and flank Yamikani Majali had good games.
