Diesel-driven SUV a winner

- Bobby Cheetham

RECOGNISING the need for a more affordable ix35 diesel model, Hyundai Automotive South Africa has launched a smaller engined vehicle to meet the demand.

And this vehicle is equipped with a frugal Euro 5 emission standards engine with a well-positioned specification level that will make this addition to their SUV line-up a lucrative offer.

The addition of the ix35 1.7 Premium with its 85kW, 260Nm turbocharged diesel engine expands the range of this SUV model of Hyundai SA to seven derivatives.

The power mill’s 1 685cc capacity is slightly smaller than the 1 995cc engine of its ix35 2.0 Elite turbodiesel partner in the range, but it generates more than enough power and torque, with lower emissions, as experienced during the launch in the Western Cape recently.

“The ix35 has been one of the strongest pillars in Hyundai Auto- motive SA’s vehicle range, and when we were given the opportunity to bring the 1.7 Premium turbodiesel to South African customers, there was no hesitation.

“We expect this derivative to appeal to an SUV buyer looking for the benefits of a frugal turbodiesel engine, but at a more affordable price and with a specification level that still offers the luxury driving experience that made the ix35 a top-seller for us,” Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive SA, said.

In the engine bay the ix35 1.7 Premium has a four-cylinder engine that delivers 85kW peak power at 4 000rpm, and a solid 260Nm peak torque in a range between 1 250 and 2 750rpm. The engine conforms to Euro 5 emission standards that define the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold in European Union member states.

In a combined test cycle it delivers fuel consumption of 6,5 litres per 100km, and lower CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

An improved six-speed gearbox with slightly different ratios than that of its two-litre turbodiesel partner delivers power to the front wheels. Its top speed is 173km/h, and acceleration from standstill to 100km/h takes 12,4 seconds.

Once again Hyundai South Africa has read market forces correctly and this smaller diesel engine vehicle is a winner!

Part of the new Hyundai ix35 package is a five-year/150 000km warranty; five-year/90 000km Service Plan; and five-year/150 000km roadside assistance.

Prices for the ix35 range start at R324 900 for the 2.0 NU Premium six-speed manual (petrol) right up to R469 900 for the 2.0 Elite six-speed auto (turbodiesel).
