Framesby win big battle on the Border
FRAMESBY and Grens scored some spectacular tries as the Port Elizabeth school shaded their East London rivals 36-33 in their rugby encounter at Framesby on Friday.
There were six tries from Framesby and five from Grens, with Framesby wing Keegan Tait scoring the winner try from a blindside move with only three minutes left.
At first it looked like an easy outing for Framesby as they went 19-0 ahead. They increased that to 24-7 at half time, but, as in their last two matches, Framesby faded badly in the second half.
Grens fought back, scoring 26 points against 12 by the home side after the break.
Framesby kept their cool, though, and seized their chance when the opportunity came to score the winning try.
Throughout the match, Framesby capitalised on the visitors’ mistakes and made better use of opportunities.
Grens were more creative, with exciting Zimbabweanborn fullback Apie Flitoor always dangerous on attack.
Their finishing was not always on target and they missed a few try-scoring opportunities.
No 8 Hanro Sirgel played an absolute blinder for Grens.
Tait (2), flank Bernard McDonald (3) and centre Julian Kleyn scored tries for Framesby. Scrumhalf Wayne Moss added three conversions.
Sirgel (2), Flitoor, wing Damian Schoeman and lock Daniel Gresse were the try-scorers for Grens. Rygaard Knoetze kicked four conversions.
Brandwag v Union
BRANDWAG produced eight tries in beating Union High 62-20 in Graaff-Reinet.
For Brandwag, tries were scored by fullback Henco Pieterse (2), flank Frank Fourie, lock Donavan Stevens, centre Keith Plaatjies, scrumhalf Brandon O'Neill and right wing Davian Swanepoel (4). Flyhalf Christian Berry kicked six conversions. For Union, right wing Sikhulule Khedema scored two tries and fullback Chulumanco Chutu added a third. Flyhalf Jonathan kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Kingswood v Hudson
KINGSWOOD narrowly lost 26-23 in a nail-biting fixture against Hudson Park in East London on Saturday.
While Kingswood will rue several missed opportunities to seal the game, Hudson Park produced a stirring defensive effort and were well worth their final-second victory.
Kingswood started well, controlling possession, and a line break eventually led to the opening try by Athi Halom, which Garrick Mattheus converted.
Kingswood’s backline constantly tested the Hudson defence, but then a mix-up allowed Hudson Park to score an unconverted try.
Kingswood hit back with a penalty by Mattheus, followed by a converted try by Ryan Victor. The half came to an end with Hudson Park capitalising on some more poor defence to score a converted try, making it 15-12 at the break.
Kingswood started the second half well, with a try in the corner by James Russell to make it 20-12.
However, Hudson Park started to dominate possession and used the rolling maul to score a well-deserved try to close the score to a one-point margin (20-19).
Kingswood then converted a penalty, but some errors in defence allowed Hudson Park to maintain territorial dominance.
A red card for a tip tackle gave Hudson Park a numerical superiority which they used to telling effect, mounting a final attack after Kingswood missed touch to cross in the corner.
The conversion from out wide was academic, but it went over.
That made the final score 26-23 to Hudson Park.
