Pearson triumph at G’town derby day

-

THE Pearson hockey teams showed impressive form at the weekend when they won their derby day matches against St Andrew’s and DSG.

In the boys’ clash in Grahamstown, Pearson started the game well by controlling possession, using this to their advantage when Innes Potgieter scored from a penalty corner.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, St Andrew’s started the second half like a house on fire and pushed hard for the equaliser.

However, the Pearson defence dealt with these attacks and halfway through the second half, Jacques Potgieter put the visitors 2-0 up with a clinical reverse stick goal.

The game swung back in favour of the visitors and 10 minutes from time a breakaway goal saw Keeran Forbes closing off the match for a 3-0 win.

Pearson v DSG

The Pearson girls’ team won their match against DSG 2-1, starting the game on an attacking note.

DSG held their strength in their defence to keep Pearson at bay, but eventually Caitlyn Gouws broke past several defenders to slot Pearson’s first goal.

DSG came back strongly, with Storm Christy equalising from a penalty corner.

Pearson, though, fought back well themselves and through good teamwork from defence into the midfield, they penetrated the DSG circle for Ashleigh Vaughn to slot the winning goal.

Netball

PEARSON dominated their netball matches against DSG in Grahamstown, winning 14 and drawing one of the 19 encounters played.

The first team match turned out to be a quality game of netball by both teams.

Pearson won the encounter 32-20 with a superb all-round performance – the scores after each quarter were 8-7, 15-13 (7-6), 25-16 (10-3), 32-20 (7-4).

Despite it being a team effort, Pearson’s Carlyle Bromfield and Amanda Tyala must be mentioned for their outstanding shooting performances.

This was backed up by a dedicated effort on defence, ably organised by Lauren McCarthy and Abigail van Rensburg, while the centre court was well marshalled by Tadia Siwisa.
