‘Ironman’ with vision

- Nomazima Nkosi nkosino@timesmedia.co.za

BETTER known as Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) marketing manager, Luvuyo Bangazi is now fast making a name for himself as a triathlete having just completed the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship South Africa.

Born in Queenstown, Bangazi was raised by his grandparents in Mlungisi.

“I got a bursary to do a BSc in geology at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University [NMMU]. I did well and used to work at the mines during holidays but I didn’t enjoy it.

“I worked at the on-campus radio station for a while and eventually dropped what I was studying,” Bangazi, 38, shared.

La Femme took Bangazi out to lunch where he shared – over his favourite meal, piatto misto at Fratelli Foods in Baakens Val- ley – how he has lost more than 40kg.

He said he got into fitness “as a fight against the bulge” when he was told by doctors he would pay extra on his premiums.

I picked Fratelli Foods because… As an employee of the MBDA, the spot represents our vision for the valley. It is about taking something that’s in a decayed state and creatively transforming it into something with soul.

I’ll know I’ve made it when… When all I do is wake up and ride my bicycle or run around town all day (how I wish).

The person who has taught me the most is ... A lot of people have taught me different things in life, be it in my early career, nine years in business, now in sport and family life, so mentioning one might be difficult. However, there is one place that has had an immense impact in how I approach life every day, Fathers House Family Church.

I have a soft spot for… Bicy- cles, running shoes and fitness gadgets.

I should have studied... Sports science.

I’d love to party with… Fikile Mbalula (guaranteed Beyonce will be there).

When I was 16, I wish I knew... How to swim and not starting at 36 like I did.

Nothing makes me happier than… Being with my beautiful wife, Vuvu (of seven years) and my daughters (Iyavuya, 6, and Inathi, 2), hanging out at home.

I absolutely hate… People who throw their weight around, name droppers and arrogant types.

I am saving to buy… To go on our family’s first overseas holiday (and squeeze in an Ironman race) trip.

I can’t go a day without... My iPad.

My favourite places in the metro are... Marine Drive, Schoenies, Maitlands – all great for cycling, Graas Roof for Sunday family breakfast after church.
