ANC should separate affairs of state and party

- Ed Gutsche, Port Elizabeth

YESTERDAY there were two beautiful private jets at the airport. Both have government insignias on.

In effect, these are government jets being used for ANC party purposes. The ANC members who flew into PE were here, not to attend to parliamentary or cabinet affairs, they were here to settle internal ANC affairs within the Nelson Mandela Bay region.

That is all well and good, however take the following into account:

ý Each jet will cost at least R100 000 per day to run;

ý Each jet is being used for at least two days at a total cost of at least R400 000, with fuel, maybe R500 000;

ý R500 000 could rather have been used by the government to provide education grants for at least 30 children to a ModelC school for a year;

ý R500 000 could rather have been used by government to provide free private healthcare to 50 elderly citizens for a year;

ý R500 000 could rather have been used by government to provide free food and shelter to at least 40 homeless people for a year;

ý R500 000 could rather have been used by government to provide toilets to at least 1 000 people who are currently using the bucket system.

Imagine what a difference this money could make to ordinary township voters lives.

This is disgusting and an insult to the voting and taxpaying populace.

It is also the primary reason why the ANC is haemorrhaging votes and just one of the reasons why it is time that the ANC learned a lesson in morals and corporate governance.

It is also time that ANC members started separating affairs of party and state.

Party members should be using the bloated and bankrupt SAA and should have the ANC paying for airfares, not taxpayers. They should not use state assets for party business. It is commonly known as a “conflict of interest”. It is also commonly called fraud as they are stealing from one to benefit another.

One other question. Did any of these members take official “leave” or are they being paid by the taxpayer for their own separate business/party affairs?

Until the ruling party starts to think along these lines, money will keep on going missing, less service delivery will happen, more supporters will move to the opposition and support will keep dropping. The youth at NMMU and Fort Hare have already spoken, how much more must be wasted before the ruling party starts to put South Africans, and not themselves, first?
