Fish farm project: consult more allies
RE: The proposed fish farm.
It is very interesting to get the opinion of the editor and other concerned citizens in relation to the fish farm project (The Herald, May 1).
While I understand the frustrations and a need for an urgent decision making, I have my own concerns.
It is not wise for any institution to jump to make decisions based on personal opinions and perceptions; this for me will only create problems.
Whichever decision the municipality makes, there will be serious consequen- ces in the economy of the region hence a need for a scientific/technical report from technical experts detailing the pros and cons of the project.
I agree with the editor, the commissioning of experts should have been done ages ago, however, it must be noted that the project is not led by the municipality and my understanding is that the institution was neither involved in the feasibility study nor on the identification of the site and does not have any documentation/reports in relation to the research studies done.
I feel that the city needs to be a priority over all negative and positive factors raised in relation to this project.
I am well aware of the contribution of the tourism industry into the city and the potential of the ocean economy in the region hence one needs to ensure that all due processes are followed and all relevant stakeholders are informed of all technical issues in relation to the project (impact on tourism, environment, economy, sustainability, etc).
