Drop IPTS, fix our water problem

- Doug de Andrade, Port Elizabeth

LIFE is about balancing your wants and needs.

If we had a to make choice between improving our water supply and implementing an ill-conceived bus system, which was imposed on the metro by the World Cup organisers, surely it is a “no brainer”.

The history of IPTS speaks for itself.

It should have been implemented by June 2010.

To date its only contribution has resulted in numerous businesses closing down, and creating traffic congestion.

At present the taxi associations and Algoa Bus Company more than adequately cater for the metro commuters needs.

At a recent meeting, MPL Tony Duba claimed that the IPTS was working in other cities.

In Cape Town and Joburg they have only been partially implemented on routes that are practical and viable (where roads are wide enough). A question mark also hangs over the metro’s capability to maintain the vehicles, if one looks at the history of some the other departments.

My recommendation would be to abandon the IPTS and obtain permission to divert the funds to improve our water supply through the proposed Nooitgedacht Scheme.
