Bay’s delish brekkie spot tops my billing

-

WHEN the City Slukker commented on how a great breakfast was just as important as a good beer a while back (and cited Old Grey Club as a venue of choice), he was asked by a few fellow-slukkers to mention more of his recommended brekkie excursions.

Of course, for the hard-working slukker – who often has to be at his work station before most rush-hour commuter trains get to theirs – it is essential that the brekkie pozzie in question opens early, which is what makes centrally situated Old Grey such an attractive option.

But CS recently popped into the enticingly named Rhubarb and Lime at Seven Park Lane off St George’s Park – which opens at an appealing 7.30am – and now has a definite address to add to his top of the morning visiting list.

The venue has an immediate welcoming and rustic ambience with its warm, cottagey feel and farm kitchen style tables, chairs and other furnishings.

The early morning crowd also seem remarkably friendly (considering it was a weekday morning), so the layout quite clearly works on one’s mood. Even if you like having a late leisurely breakfast, that certainly isn’t a problem here, as one of the best features of the eatery, is that it offers all-day breakfasts and there’s a tummy-rumbling menu to choose from.

CS opted for The Maverick (R39) with which – coming from someone who knows his brekkies – was a really impressive, tasty and satisfying affair.

A ciabatta toast stack with layers of perfectly grilled bacon and rocket topped with a poached egg and then drizzled with one of the best, tangy hollandaise sauces CS has tasted in a long time – it was absolutely delish.

Served with a large pot of Ceylon (R14) it was a brekkie CS will be back to the pozzie for – and probably again to try some of the equally scrumptious-sounding others.

Service was most attentive and there was no long wait for the meal – another bonus if you are in a bit of a rush to get to work.

Rhubarb and Lime also has a reputation for its range of coffees – regular Americano and the more exotic – and judging by the number of people who popped in to get a take-away while CS was there, it appears well-earned.

This is also a popular lunch venue and you will find a list of pitas, wraps, burgers, salads, pasta, pizza, sandwiches and desserts to choose from, along with special meals of the day.

This is a spot that is highly recommended as far as CS’s best brekkie billing is concerned.
