KINGSWOOD hit back with a try in the dying seconds of the game to register an exciting 18-15 win over Pearson in their schools rugby clash at Pearson on Saturday. In a fast-paced game, the teams entertained the large crowd at the main event of the Pearson reunion celebrations.

Kingswood opened the scoring with a unconverted try by Shane Potgieter before Pearson replied through burly prop Luthando Fini, who dived over to equal matters at 5-5.

Pearson took control of the rest of the first half and went ahead through a penalty by flyhalf Duwayne Baartman and a try by lock Tristan Brown to lead 15-5 at the break.

Kingswood came back strongly in the second half with a penalty by Josh Shelley, followed by an unconverted try by Nicholas Schenk to bring the score back to 15-13 in favour of Pearson with a minute left to play.

After Pearson were awarded a scrum, the Kingswood pack managed to scramble a tighthead and worked the ball out to Potgieter who scored his second try of the game in a match-winning final movement.

Boys’ hockey

A GOAL in the dying seconds enabled Kingswood to snatch a 3-3 draw with Pearson in their encounter at Pearson on Friday.

In cold conditions, the game never really got going in the first half, with the visitors taking a 2-1 lead as they seized their chances, while Pearson were complacent in defence.

After the break Pearson bounced back to score twice and move ahead 3-2, before Kingswood capitalised on an opportunity with 10 seconds remaining to level the match at 3-3.

Girls’ hockey

WITH the first team leading the way, the Pearson girls hockey teams won eight of their fixtures against Kingswood and drew the remaining two.

The first team again displayed their class and strength as they dominated their encounter, winning 5-0. Pearson started on an attacking note and, with the strikers in top form, scored three goals in the first 10 minutes.

Lise de Villiers was again a major factor, outrunning the Kingswood midfield players with her speed on the ball to support her strikers, while also slotting two goals in the first half.

Simone Upman added the third goal in the early stages as Pearson took control.

Ongi Mali was often the playmaker for the goals, showing her speed to get the ball into the circle for the strikers to finish.

Ashleigh Vaughn scored a fine goal from a De Villiers pass to make it 4-0 at the break.

In the second half, Kingswood came back fighting hard, led by Aimee-Leigh Pote. She proved a tower of strength in the Kingswood team and had an excellent match.

The Pearson defence performed well to keep Kingswood from scoring, with goalkeeper Nicole de Villiers playing a crucial role.

Kirsten Manthe sealed a classy performance for the hosts, completing the scoring with Pearson’s fifth goal.
