Social Workers Union president’s assets seized
THE Asset Forfeiture Unit raided the East London home of South African Social Workers Union president Zola Maziyana yesterday and seized property valued at R4-million.
At the time of the raid, Maziyana was busy with an interview via telephone with popular KwaZulu-Natal radio station Ukhozi FM.
He stands accused of defrauding the Twelve Apostles Church in Christ in East London of R6.8-million.
During the radio interview, Maziyana demanded that President Jacob Zuma release the Marikana commission report within the next 14 days “so the law can take its course”.
He told thousands of Ukhozi FM listeners that the longer the president took to release the report, the better the chances were of tampering with it.
“We cannot wait for another three years for the report to be released because by then those responsible for the killings of miners might have resigned and run away from the law,” he said.
A few minutes later AFU officers confiscated the couch he was sitting on.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Tshepo Ndwalaza said yesterday’s midday raid followed an order granted by the Grahamstown High Court on Monday.
Hawks members yesterday collected his wife, Zukiswa Maziyana, from her workplace at Eskom in Beacon Bay to retrieve her Toyota Rav 4.
The couple’s Sunnyridge home and Maziyana’s Hyundai Elantra were also seized, along with 27 furniture items valued at R100 000.
About R2.6-million from the couple’s five bank accounts has been frozen.
The order made provision for the couple to continue paying their various instalments while the investigation continues. They have not yet been criminally charged. Contacted for comment yesterday, the chairman of the Twelve Apostles board, Austin Nongqunga, said the law must take its course.
