Pedalling for charity
A SPORTS enthusiast is asking families to lace up their takkies or roll out their bicycles for a charity fun day on Sunday.
Sales rep Matthew Eekhout, 22, is hosting the event on May 31 at the Norm-Hudlin trails in Kragga Kamma Road, with all proceeds going to Khayalethu Youth Centre in Kragga Kamma.
The event offers a 17km course, a 7km course and a 3km course and participants can choose whichever they want, while athletes are encouraged to bring their mountain bikes because the terrain is sandy and sometimes grassy.
Khayalethu Youth Centre offers alternative care for street children, specifically for boys, between the ages of eight and 18.
It also meets basic needs through a holistic and developmental approach, with the ulti- mate aim of re-socialisation and family re-unification. Eekhout is one of 12 finalists in the Mr Port Elizabeth 2015 pageant and Khayalethu is the competition’s main charity beneficiary this year.
“I love adventure and I’m an outgoing person which is why I decided to organise this event.
“It’s well suited to my personality and it’s also an opportunity to get families outside to experience nature, bring a blanket, listen to some music and to socialise,” Eekhout said.
“There is also a run and a walk in which people can participate in and do all three obstacles.
“The entry fee is R40 and any other donations are more than welcome,” he said.
The cycle track will be open at 5am and a flea market, with seven stalls, will be open from 9am.
