Hit-and-run: Rhodes student on bail
A DURBAN man studying at Rhodes University appeared briefly in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident at the weekend.
Khanya Ndimba, 20, of Fernglen in Port Elizabeth, died after being struck by a car in New Street, Grahamstown, at about 4am on Saturday.
The alleged driver, Robert Gary White, reportedly fled the scene but handed himself over to the police later.
White, 20, was released on R500 bail after appearing on charges of culpable homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident.
He was accompanied by his father and a lawyer. The case was postponed to July 21.
Police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender said police were still gathering evidence and awaiting a forensic report regarding the red Suzuki involved in the accident.
“The investigation is still under way and we are awaiting various reports,” she said.
Ndimba, who would have turned 21 next week and had been planning to celebrate with family at home, was killed while walking to a nearby filling station to buy food.
She was with two friends after studying at the library.
Rhodes University student affairs director Colleen Vassiliou described Ndimba as a well-liked and dedicated student who had a bright future.
