Unique music gig to help animals in need

- Nicole Downing

THIRD-year fine art student Rebecca Hayter and pharmacy student Rachel Williams have combined their passion for music, art and animals to organise a live music event in aid of the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL).

However, Creatures of Contrast is no ordinary gig. The event, which takes place at The Music Kitchen in Newton Park on Thursday, will also include live visual artists, a lucky draw and small artworks donated by Hayter’s fellow-students, which will be on sale.

And, true to the theme of the event, guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite animal. “I’ve always had a profound love for animals,” Hayter, who is also the leading lady of popular local band, Well Done Sun, said.

“But in the last three years, I’ve become aware of the horrid treatment of all kinds of animals all over the world.”

It was this, coupled with other initiatives of a similar nature, that inspired her to organise Creatures of Contrast.

“The main objective I want for this event is [to create] awareness of animal cruelty, of the charities out there, what we can do to help and simply how to live a cruelty-free lifestyle,” she said.

Mark Dorward, owner of The Music Kitchen, shares Rebecca’s love of animals, having acquired his canine companion, Shaggy, from the Animal Welfare Society in 2009.

Guests can look forward to performances by Well Done Sun, Emile Naidu and Tomas Quinn.

“I would not be anywhere on Thursday night other than at The Music Kitchen playing for a good cause,” Hanno van den Berg, lead guitarist and vocalist of Well Done Sun, said.

Van den Berg’s original song, Creatures of Contrast, was the inspiration behind the name of the event. Something to also look forward to is live art by Artur Niit and Angel Mey.

“Live art infuses the surroundings, audience, music and atmosphere into the artwork. You become part of the process and artwork itself,” Hayter said.

The artists will create their artwork, while guests are invited to watch and interact.

Thereafter, a silent bid for the artwork begins with all proceeds going to AACL

Tickets for the event are R50 each and can be purchased at the door. Doors open at 7pm.
