Tail-enders in shock win over defending champs

FAIRVIEW Rovers provided the shock of the first round of the Nafa Mala Moodaley KO Cup competitio­n on Sunday when they bundled defending champions Blackpool out of the competitio­n.

The Premier League tail-enders, who were thrashed 3-0 by Bloom Callies in a league match the previous day, held Blackpool to a goalless draw before winning 5-4 on penalties.

In another match to end in penalties, Westlake – second on the log – lost 5-4 to Hotspurs. Full-time score was 1-1.

Hotspurs have won the competitio­n more often than any other team since its inception more than 60 years ago.

Log leaders Helenvale thrashed Stars 6-1.

In a First Division derby, Easter tournament champions Shamrocks lost 2-1 to Chatty United.

NAFA has organised a Youth Day festival in the form of a North v South soccer tournament commencing at 9am today at the Gelvan fields.

“It is incumbent on us to ensure that generation­s to come will be reminded and informed of this day and the impact it had on the history of this country.

“We are using this day as an opportunit­y to address the youth and remind them of those important values that determine our moral compass,” Nafa president Clive Killian said.

“As Nafa we wish to use this day as the beginning of our developmen­t programme which will cater for our above-average talented youngsters.

“One of the most effective ways of combating the social ills in our communitie­s is through sport and it is our moral duty to keep our kids off the street.”

Day’s programme: Gelvan 1: 9am – U13, 10am – Women’s match, 11am – U17, 1.30pm – U11, 2.20pm – U9, 3pm – Seniors. Gelvan 2: 9am – U15, 10am – Women’s match, 11am – U19.
