NELSON Mandela Bay fans of international singing superstar and sensational 1980s icon Jennifer Rush can get to see her perform live at the Feather Market Centre on October 30.

Born and based in New York, Rush was in the Bay yesterday to prepare for her upcoming South African tour, celebrating 30 years of her chart-topping hit single Power of Love.

Speaking to The Herald, Rush said she had decided to come to South Africa earlier so she could prepare for her tour. “It’s always very exciting to come to South Africa and it is even more exciting to start my world tour in this beautiful country.

“For my South African tour, I have worked with an all-South African band. As I take South Africans down memory lane, I will also add a fresh 21st-century twist to my ‘80s songs and maybe perform two cover songs.

“I am very happy with the band . . . as they are all talented musicians. We have already started with band rehearsals in Johannesburg.”

Rush has sold more than 50 million albums and has collaborated with international artists like Elton John, Michael Bolton, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo.

Her mega hit Power of Love is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling single by a female artist in the history of British pop. Other big hits included Flames of Paradise, Ring of Ice, I Come Undone and Madonna’s Eyes.

“The music industry has changed over the years. I remember when I was still young, I did not like classical music but I respected it. Nowadays people can listen to any music they like because they have access to different genres of music.

“My 21-year-old daughter . . . listens to thousands of different types of music. Even though she is not a musician, it would be lovely to bring her here for my South African tour so she can see the business side of music. There are a lot of challenges in this business. There are very disheartening and corrupt people. I always tell people who are interested to be in this industry to be very determined.”

Rush will perform across eight cities from October 9 till November 6. Tickets for the shows start from R290 and are available at Computicket.
