No shortage of goals in Pefa junior league games

THE U9 division in the Port Elizabeth Football Associatio­n junior leagues continued the battle for top spot in fine weather at the Union fields on Sunday.

Newcomers Hearts Barbarians drew 1-1 with Priory City in a closely contested game. Kyle Edwards scored for Priory, while Coby Plaaitjies equalised for Hearts.

St George’s Cavaliers beat Callies Saltires 2-0, with goals by Mathew Bowman and Darius Hartin.

In an all-Priory affair, the Pirates beat the Chiefs 4-0, with a hat-trick by Drey Jantjies. Callies Highlander­s beat St George’s Braves 7-0. Orlando Mbembe scored the second hat-trick of the day.

In the big clash of the day, St George’s Aces players Connor Olivier and Caleb Humphries each scored a brace to give their team a 4-0 win over Priory Rangers.

In the last game, Hearts Lads beat Callies Thistles 2-0. Caleb Falconer scored first for Hearts, followed by a cracker from outside the box by Zac Thornton to seal the win.

In the U11 age group St George’s A put in a strong performanc­e to beat Motherwell Academy 6-2. Payton Spencer scored a hat-trick, while Myles Boden added two goals and Casey Keevy one. Callies B and Priory played to a 1-1 draw. Inam Mwellie scored for Callies while a goal-mouth scramble resulted in the equaliser for Priory.

In the U13 division Callies occupy top spot on the log with 21 points at the end of the first round, followed closely by St George’s on 18 points.

Motherwell and FC Mabayibone lie third and fourth respective­ly.

Motherwell U15 pulled out all the stops to beat Hearts 3-1 at The Valley. After going into the break 1-0 down, Hearts equalised through Rizaan Davis, but Motherwell regrouped and scored twice to win.

Tools FC beat St George’s U15B 4-2, while NMMU thrashed St George’s U15A 9-1.

St George’s A and Motherwell are level at the top of the table with 21 points each, followed by Hearts and Callies A on 19 points each.

In the only U17 game of the day KwaDwesi All Stars beat Tools FC 4-1, bringing the first round to an end. St George’s are on top of the U17 log, followed by Motherwell, KwaDwesi All Stars and Callies.

This weekend sees the annual Engen U17 Knockout Challenge taking place in Gelvandale, with St George’s flying the flag for Pefa.
