Gamble team to watch in night relay

-

THE first round of the Town Lodge Business Night Relay takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tomorrow from 6pm and all eyes will on the Gamble Pharmacy team to see how they fare over the shorter 3.5km route.

Having dominated the series over the past couple of years, the youngsters from the Gamble Pharmacy team have only ever been challenged by the Transnet team.

“We think the change to the shorter distance is going to be great and we’re looking forward to it as this makes it quicker and more compet- itive,” Antonio Seconds, a regular in the team in previous years and who will head up their mixed team this year, said.

The Gamble Pharmacy A team will comprise Brandon Effenaar, Adriaan Gerwel, Andre Ketchem, Aphlon Taai and Mariano Esau, with local Olympian Lusapo April replacing Esau when he returns from America for rounds two and three.

Esau has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Student Games and flies out on Friday morning after the race.

The event is a three-part night relay series for relay teams comprising five runners or three walkers, with each team member required to complete one lap of the route.

This year sees a route change to a more competitive 3.5km loop within the stadium precinct and including a stretch around the stadium using level 2 and level 5.

Entry is R500 per running team and R300 per walking team and can be made on www.businessnightrelay.co.za before the end of today. Late entries will be received at the event but an additional late entry fee will apply.

Registration and collection of team numbers and baton will take place from 4.30pm tomorrow at the stadium.

Relay races start at 6pm and will be followed by prize-giving at 8pm.
