Dancers thrilled to be back home

‘Ballet Bouquet’ brings best of the classics

-

DANCE and ballet lovers are very excited about the much-anticipated dance production, Ballet Bouquet, to be staged at the Savoy Theatre this weekend.

Two Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) dancers, Angela Hansford and Revil Yon, also have reason to be excited.

Both dancers grew up in Port Elizabeth and received their formative ballet training at GwenMary Wells’s ballet studio.

Hansford took her first tentative ballet steps at the age of seven while Yon started his training at the age of 15.

With leading roles like Odette ( Swan Lake), the Snow Queen ( The Nutcracker) and Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis ( Giselle) in her repertoire, Hansford has danced her way right to the top and was appointed a principal dancer at CTCB in 2014.

Yon, appointed as a member of the company in 2012, danced his first leading role as Prince Cornelius ( Thumbelina) last year and is an Artist at CTCB.

As the opportunity to dance in Port Elizabeth does not present itself that often, Hansford and Yon are looking forward to performing in their hometown.

They said: “It will be great to see our friends in the audience!”

Ballet Bouquet features extracts from much-loved ballets and is staged by Robin van Wyk, artistic director of CTCB.

The show, which includes 65 local dancers who have been in rehearsal since March this year, marks Van Wyk’s 10th production for the Friendly City Youth Ballet company.

The cast will perform scenes from The Nutcracker (Act 1 & 2), and the audience can also look forward to glorious pas de deux from Swan Lake and Romeo & Juliet.

The show is at 3pm and 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, and tickets are available at Computicket at R85.
