Sponsor boost for club

Promoted United Cricket Club have big development plans

UNITED Cricket Club, newly promoted to the Nelson Mandela Bay premier league, have announced two major sponsors to assist them with the challenges faced by grassroots cricket clubs.

GAP Management was announced as United’s major sponsor for the 2015-16 season with a contribution of R150 000.

These funds will be utilised to buy playing equipment and kit, and to assist with the smooth running of the club.

Playing cricket gear bought from these funds in the form of flannels, long- and short-sleeve shirts, socks, tracksuits and warm-up shorts, as well as cricket equipment, were recently on show at a modelling session with young United women members.

Mercia Oliphant, representing GAP Management managing director Willem Oliphant, handed over a symbolic cheque to club president Julius Majola, confirming the company’s commitment to grassroots sports development.

She assured the club of their continued support as long as it adhered to strict discipline, displayed consistent improvement in their performances and ensured there was good governance.

Mncekeleli Daniso, on behalf of Daku and New Brighton SuperSpar’s managing director, Billy Brighton, also announced their association with the club following their involvement in the awards dinner last season.

Spar has again committed to sponsor the club’s awards for the 2015-16 season, scheduled for April 26 at the Nangoza Jebe Hall.

The function will be used to celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary and to honour their honorary life president, Silas Nkanunu.

Spar has also committed itself to sponsor lunches for all United’s home premier and prospect league games played at the Dan Qeqe Stadium.

Other than their two major sponsors, United also paid tribute to their other sponsors for their contributions to try to improve the lives and cricket careers of young players from the townships.

Following their promotion to the premier league, United also unveiled their new acquisitions who will bolster their playing ranks.

Among them are EP Amateur allrounder Phumzile Yiba, former SA U19 player Bradley Bopp, ex-PG Bison Week and Graeme College batsman Sam Freeman and allrounder Neville Botha, formerly of Motherwell.
