VARIOUS non-profit organisations (NPOs) in Nelson Mandela Bay will continue helping those in need following a donation of R1-million through the Community Chest at the Eastern Province Children and Youth Centre this week.

The Community Chest Eastern Cape is a 63 year-old NPO that is affiliated with the Community Chest South Africa and raises funds for other NPOs in the province.

Cheques of different amounts were handed over to 66 daycare centres, churches, children’s homes, and organisations for the disabled in Eastern Cape.

Community Chest chief executive officer Beulah Lumkwana said their objec- tive was to improve lives and restore hope and people’s dignity.

“Because of so many social ills people have lost hope.

“By feeding 200 people every hour every day, we are putting food on people’s tables and restoring their hope,” Lumkwana said.

The NPO follows a funding criteria and a strict selection process as eligible organisations have to be registered, and have a governing body.

“Applicants have to be able to manage finances, have good financial control and be able to account for every cent they spent. We have to make sure of this because we are dealing with donor funds,” Lumkwana explained.

Bay residents can assist in alleviating poverty by contacting the Community Chest at 041-582 1892.
