Jason comes out tops at Inter Schools clash

- Herald Reporter

ALEXANDER Road High School pupil Jason Duffin came out tops at this year’s Inter Schools Competition hosted by the Algoa Toastmasters’ Club.

The competition was held at Collegiate High School on Tuesday evening, with toastmaster Tom Horne as chief contest judge and Algoa Toastmaster Club vice-president Colleen Love as contest chair.

The toastmasters run eightweek youth leadership courses at Nelson Mandela Bay schools whereby Grade 11 pupils are taught communication and presentation skills and how to run a meeting and conduct themselves in the business world.

At the end of each course, a competition is held where each pupils has to deliver a three- to five-minute speech on a subject of their choice.

The five top speakers then compete in an impromptu contest where the overall winner is decided. This year, 14 schools participated.

“This is a healthy competition and to ensure that there is no bias, the learners competing do not wear school uniform and only after the results have been announced, are their respective schools announced,” Love said.

“Parents and other learners are encouraged to attend and support their children and friends.”

Jason finished first, Pearson High School’s Nicola Verwey second, and Sivuyile Mamanzi, of St Dominic’s Priory High School, third.
