Join South Africans for carpooling fun

-

CARPOOL Week is a national initiative that raises awareness about the benefits of carpooling with an aim to change behaviour away from the single driver car.

This year you can join thousands of South Africans who will participate in Carpool Week 2015 by sharing a carpool karaoke clip using the hashtag #carpoolweekSA.

Carpool karaoke is the theme for Carpool Week 2015, to be held from October 5 to 11.

It will promote the social side of carpooling and share many personal stories from carpoolers themselves.

Says Daniel Claassen, Carpool Week catalyst and founder of FindaLift: “The fuel price is up 60% and there are 22% more cars on our roads since 2010.

“Given the fact that 33% of all work trips are done by private vehicle, carpooling can play an important role in fostering behavioural change, reducing our carbon footprint, saving money and relieving traffic congestion.”

Often overlooked are the social benefits of carpooling that can have a big impact on people’s lives. Often the members of a carpool play counsellor, coach, dietitian and parent adviser in their lift club.

There is a common misunderstanding that carpooling takes away your flexibility. Not so, says Claassen: you can reap great rewards from carpooling just one day a week.

It can save 10% on your fuel bill and emissions, and you could end up making friends for life.

Small changes can improve our lives and the world we live in.
