Helenvale can take another step to title

- Mogan Segadavan segadavanm@timesmedia.co.za

HELENVALE can put one hand firmly on their maiden Northern Areas Football Association premier league title tomorrow when they host nearest challengers Bloom Callies in Helenvale.

Victory will put them on 64 points and they would then need just a draw against relegation-threatened Swallows to put them clear of the chasing pack with three matches to play.

The log-leaders and Callies clashed in the Mayoral Cup semifinals last week, with Callies winning in a penalty shootout. They fared dismally in the final, losing 3-1 to Westlake.

Callies must beat Helenvale tomorrow and Hotspurs on Sunday to stay in the hunt for the title.

Spurs will not be easy pickings as they desperately need points to avoid relegation. They play Park United tomorrow.

Fairdene, Stardrift, Saints and Ebenezer should make their league status safe if they pick up a point or two from their double-headers.

The crunch match should be the clash between Rangers and Booysens Pride in Booysen Park tomorrow. They are separated by just one point at the bottom of the log.

Hotspurs and Swallows, who fill the next two spots, also have everything to play for. Hotspurs play Park United in their second match, while Swallows are up against Glenville.

Fairview Rovers must beat Ebenezer and Blackpool to get out of the relegation zone.

The fixtures are: Tomorrow: Westlake v Saints (Saints), Blackpool v Stardrift (Gelvan 1), Booysens Pride v Rangers (Booysen Park), Hotspurs v Park United (Dyke), Helenvale v Bloom Callies (Helenvale), Swallows v Glenville (Errol Heynes), Fairview Rovers v Ebenezer (Finnis 1), Fairdene v Wolves (Finnis 2) Sunday: Saints v Booysens Pride (Saints), Bloom Callies v Hotspurs (Finnis 1), Wolves v Park United (Malabar 1), Ebenezer v Glenville (Errol Heynes), Stardrift v Rangers (Marock Road), Fairdene v Westlake (Finnis 2), Swallows v Helenvale (Gelvan 1), Blackpool v Fairview Rovers (Gelvan 2)
