Switching off lights to help save world
THE 10th celebration of Earth Day, organised by the WWF and backed by other NGOs to raise awareness about the threat of climate change, will see landmark monuments – from the Eiffel Tower to the Empire State building to Taipei 101 in Taiwan – go dark at 8.30pm local time today.
In Port Elizabeth The Boardwalk will switch off lights for an hour from 8.30pm.
Areas affected include all the Tivoli lights in the roof of the retail area and the hotel, as well as Craft restaurant, Coast restaurant and Kipling’s restaurant at the Boardwalk Hotel.
Some restaurants at The Boardwalk will also switch off non-essential lights and guests will eat their meals by candlelight.
The campaign encourages individuals to participate and adjust their lifestyles to trim carbon footprints, thus incrementally reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming. – Weekend Post reporter and AFP
