Rivals Madibaz, Callies to clash

- Mogan Segadavan segadavanm@timesmedia.co.za

ALL eyes in the Pefa Score premier soccer league will be on the NMMU south campus this evening when NMMU Madibaz host rivals Callies.

After the teams met in the final match of the season last year the students were crowned champions, but not without some drama.

A week before the match, Callies had a 17-goal advantage and just needed to win the final fixture to clinch the league title.

However, during the week the students played a catch-up fixture, hammering Forresters 19-0.

Callies then needed to beat the students 3-0 but the match was drawn 1-1, giving NMMU the title.

This season the teams are level on points in third place.

Callies and Madibaz will be back in action on Sunday, with the Londt Park outfit hosting Mahle Old Grey and the students playing Central Acemates at Victoria Park.

Forresters will start as favourites when they play Priory Shamrocks, a high school side who seem to be out of their depth in the league.

The fixtures are: Tonight: St George’s v Hearts (Union), NMMU Madibaz v Callies (south campus) Tomorrow: Forresters v Priory Shamrocks (tba), PE City v Leeds United (VP) Sunday: Callies v Mahle Old Grey (Londt Park), Central Acemates v NMMU Madibaz (VP)
