Afro-soul singer Jikwa to perform
JAZZ’AFRO Sundays at the Barn presents Afro-soul singer Pam Jikwa this weekend.
The Nelson Mandela Bay-born singer says she fell in love with music from a young age, growing up under the tutelage of the well-known group Isaphetha and starting her singing career at church where she joined the group MGG.
She later joined the group Three Sisters which once opened for Bebe & Cece Winans at The Telkom Park Music Concert in 2006. In 2007, Jikwa joined her husband, in-laws and family friends in forming an Afro-pop group called Cornerstone (Afro-Tones).
Cornerstone toured throughout South Africa sharing the stage with names such as Ringo Madlingozi, Lira and Jimmy Dludlu. One of Jikwa’s pinnacles was working as a backing vocalist for Nomfusi and Putuma.
She says many musicians from this province have inspired her, including Zahara, Siphokazi, Thandiswa Mazwai, Zonke and Phinda Mtya.
After working with Take Note Jazz Band, she decided to pursue a solo career after meeting producers Siya Somthunzi and Mlamli Nganase from Joyful Sounds Records. It was at this time that she recorded her debut album, Amasi, released in 2014.
The single of the album Yintoni Na Le has been receiving air play on various national radio stations.
Jikwa’s show is at 4pm on Sunday at the Barn. Tickets are R50 and seating is limited.
