Involvement in community and needs makes us human

-

I AM not a specific fan or supporter of Danny Jordaan or Athol Trollip. What I am is a citizen who firmly believes in community spirit and acting in a humanitarian manner.

That philosophy is “proudly” sung from the rooftops by all political parties, including the ANC.

If I see a community, person or animal in need, I stop and assist. Whether it be people in need or people in distress at sea, in fires, in accidents, assisting schools/education (as Christian Martin has done) and helping injured animals, I do assist.

When there are severe floods and many people in the northern areas are left homeless and cold in winter, it is the community that rallies around and delivers clothing or food to places such as Missionvale. It is part of my, and hopefully all of our, DNA as humans to help those in need.

Involvement in our communities makes us human and helps to build bridges. More of it is needed.

For Martin, Noxolo Kiviet and Kupido Baron and the rest of the ANC to try to call Trollip out for trying to assist in a fire is ludicrous and totally against the spirit of ubuntu that the ANC tries to proclaim to our nation. It goes totally against our DNA as humans and being a humanitarian.

Did any of you ever ask yourselves: “What if?” What if, as is the case with most shack fires, the blaze had rapidly spread to neighbouring shacks, but because of your illogical “logic” people rather just stood back and watched while other people’s homes burnt down and babies were burnt alive?

Do not lie to us, you know it happens. What if people just stood back or drove past because they were too afraid that the mighty ANC would rather punish people for trying to help instead of actually getting involved?

To Martin, Baron and Kiviet, you are the inhumane ones here and beware of the principle that you set here as it could have long-lasting, very detrimental effects the next time you all ask us, your community, for help. I can tell you now that if you proceed with this silly political ploy, don’t ever expect me and the community to come running again.

That would be sad. Till then I will leave you with this bit of wisdom as it is clearly needed: “Now that we have learned to fly in the air like birds, and dive in the sea like fish, only one thing remains – to learn to live on earth like humans” – George Bernard Shaw.
