Winners take all in girls’ hockey matches
COLLEGIATE’S annual derby day with Oranje from Bloemfontein was disrupted by the weather in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, although all the hockey matches were played.
The first-team game started at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating opportunities.
The half ended at 0-0, and Oranje came out firing in the second half.
Unfortunately, Collegiate had a seven-minute lapse of concentration during which they were severely punished.
At 4-0 down, Collegiate dug deep and showed immense character to lift their intensity, but they were unable to penetrate the Oranje defence.
Collegiate head of sport Chantell Posthumus said: “We thoroughly enjoyed our derby day with Oranje.
“The level of hockey they play is immense, but each year we find ourselves becoming more and more competitive.
“We look forward to next year’s fixture.”
Kingswood v VG
IN a good finish to the season, Kingswood defeated Victoria Girls 4-0 in their hockey encounter at the weekend.
The game started off with VG winning a corner but the Kingswood defence stood firm.
Kingswood struggled in the opening minutes as the team fell into a trap of rushing and not being tactically aware.
However, Ciana Daniels opened the scoring for Kingswood to make it 1-0 at the break.
The team came out firing in the second half, determined to penetrate the VG defence.
Kingswood were able to take control early on and never released the pressure.
Once they had possession, they made a lot of passes, both into space and to players going forward, which resulted in Emma Fraser and Bianca de Klerk (2) adding to their tally.
De Klerk’s second goal was a superb back-stick shot.
Pearson v Union
PEARSON’S girls’ hockey teams had a successful trip to Graaff-Reinet on Saturday, defeating Union High in four matches while losing one.
Despite missing some of their frontline players, the Pearson first team outplayed the home side 5-0. They led 3-0 at half time. Union could not match the pace of the Pearson side and Roxy van Wyk showed good form with a hat-trick.
Kaylin Fourie and Dani Garner netted the other goals.
Union tried hard to penetrate the Pearson circle, but goalkeeper Nicole de Villiers was solid in defence.
