Grey squash side SA champions

-

THE Grey High squash team were crowned national schools champions after they won the Top Schools event in Pietermartizburg at the weekend, beating Selborne College in their final game.

The top eight boys’ and girls’ schools in South Africa took part in the tournament, held at Epworth School.

Grey opened on a convincing note with wins against Paarl Boys’ High and Michaelhouse.

A 5-1 win against Pretoria Boys’ High on Saturday made them the pool winners, setting them up for a cross-pool match with St John’s.

The pace of the play began to catch up with the Grey boys as they dropped two matches, but still got home 17-8.

They took a 10-point lead into the final fixture against Selborne.

Grey No 3 Murray Keeton overcame a shaky start to help his team draw first blood, beating Keoghan Penhall.

The No 1s then met, with Selborne’s Adam Shean made to work all the way by Murray Schepers before he won 3-1 to level the match.

Top-ranked national U14 player Tristan Worth upset Grey’s hopes when he beat No 4 Gerard Mitchell in five games.

Selborne’s Daniel Elliot then took a 2-0 lead against Juandre Venter before the Grey player pulled out all the stops to win 11-7 in the fifth.

Team captain Stephen Southway sealed the win with a come-frombehind 3-2 victory over Adam Richards, the team emulating Grey’s 1998 side, the previous team to be crowned champions.

GREY High and Grey College played out an exciting 2-2 draw in their clash on Friday. The game was played at a frenetic pace, despite the wet weather.

Grey High found the back of the net after a tense opening 15 minutes with a well-taken field goal by Cal Paulsen. Grey College equalised with a penalty corner drag flick just before half time to make the score 1-1 at the break.

Grey High went ahead again within minutes of the restart, via a field goal by Chris Wynford, after some good build-up play down the right channel.

However, Grey College drew level after another penalty corner via a drag flick in the 45th minute, to make it 2-2.

Despite both teams having opportunities in the final 15 minutes, the score remained unchanged.
