Night vigil at UJ for student shot by security guard

- Jan Bornman

STUDENTS and Fees Must Fall activists at the University of Johannesburg held a vigil last night for a student who was killed by a private security guard at the weekend, calling for the removal of private security from campus.

Kevin Baloyi, 21, a BSc computer science and informatics first-year student, was allegedly shot and killed at The Yards private residence after an altercation at an end-ofyear party.

A statement from the residence said: “At this stage it is unclear exactly what transpired, but initial reports suggest that an altercation took place between a group of students and an individual after an end-ofyear party held at the building.”

It said the shooter entered the residence with private security guards. The gunman has yet to be arrested. “The University of Johannesburg is saddened by the death of one of our students, who was fatally shot in the early hours of Saturday morning, allegedly by a security guard at privately owned accommodation where he resided,” university spokeswoman Kaamini Reddy said.

“The cause of the incident is unclear at the moment.”

Reddy said the gunman was not employed by the university.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza said: “We are looking for the man. At this particular stage we just want him to assist us with the investigation.”

SRC president Onwabile Lubhelwana said they could only comment once they had received more information.
