CALLIES coach Moenier Safedien is delighted with his team’s performance in their 3-1 win against Morning Star in the ABC Motsepe League at the weekend.

The league rookies have not lost a single match so far this season, but the coach said his troops needed to be more solid in front.

Callies have collected 14 points from the six matches they have played so far this season – winning four and drawing two.

“A generally good performance from the team,” Safedien said.

“But we need to be more clinical in front of goal and improve on our defending as well.”

Callies created many chances during the first half in the first few minutes of the game, but struggled to find the back of the net.

Callies captain Farouk Abrahams scored the opening goal of the game midway through the first half, after receiving a good pass from Orenthal Jordaan.

In the second half, things heated up with Stars pressing for an equaliser.

But the second goal came through a penalty for Callies, after Vernan Campher was brought down inside the box. Abrahmas stepped up to take the shot and comfortably placed the ball in the back of the net, to double his side’s lead to 2-0.

Stars pulled one back, but then Enrico Plaatjies sealed the match for Callies, who were delighted to grab the maximum three points from their sweet victory.

Meanwhile, Lion City clinched the Motherwell derby honours by beating rivals Young Ideas 1-0.

The win also saw Ideas keep their unbeaten run in the league.
