Grey tops in nailbiter at Woodridge

-

GREY High’s tail got the job done as they pulled off a narrow one-wicket win over Woodridge with only two balls to spare in their schools match at Thornhill at the weekend.

Woodridge won the toss and opted to bat on an overcast morning.

The ball swung and seamed early, with Campbell de Wet giving the batsmen all sorts of headaches and eventually finishing with four for 27.

Andrew Christodoulou was the rock of the Woodridge innings, making 33 from 83 balls. However, when he was out caught off Nicholas Fowler the innings fell away with Woodridge being dismissed for 133.

Grey were soon on the back foot as they lost a wicket in the second over.

Woodridge then sniffed an opportunity and some quick wickets, combined with some poor shot selection, had Grey reeling on 57 for six at the drinks break.

The in-form Tristan Stubbs was still at the crease and he batted with patience and some excellent shot selection. He needed to as Woodridge bowled very tightly with Jade de Klerk especially good in taking three for nine in his 10 overs.

Grey continued to battle, pushing the score ever closer with a good partnership between Stubbs and Fowler.

Fowler then fell with Grey still needing 15 to win and eight wickets down.

With four left to win, Stubbs was then given out leg before wicket, leaving 10 and 11 at the crease with two overs to go. They batted sensibly in a difficult situation, the winning boundary coming with two balls remaining.
