LAY CHARGES OVER ARMY ACTIONS IN CITY

LOADED rifles are only allowed in a war zone – to say they are part of uniform is rubbish. They were used to intimidate innocent citizens of Port Elizabeth. The army doesn’t respect the law of our country. The base commander must be charged. SHOCKED

IF this is how the army handles furniture removal, God help us if they are asked to assist with student unrest. MALCOLM DODDS, SHERWOOD THE armed mob that arrived at City Hall on Friday should all be criminally charged and jailed. I call them a mob, because soldiers they are definitely not! Overweight, obese in cases, unruly and not even wearing proper uniforms! HENDRI

GIVEN the manner in which soldiers rode roughshod over the rights of citizens in an arrogant example of “the insolence of office” makes it clear why the government has decided to withdraw from the ICC. If this is how the army acts on home soil, imagine how they would act on foreign soil. ED KIRWIN SANDF louts. Court-marshal them without delay, then charge them with treason. ALF

WHO is in charge of the local SANDF rabble? What happened on Friday is totally unacceptable. Our municipality is totally divorced from the army. What are their gripes ? Maybe they want to join the DA ? In that case, welcome. RICHARD, CHARLO ANARCHY arrived in PE on Friday! JZ is in Zimbabwe receiving his “degree in dictatorship” from Mad Bob. At the same time, “the army” takes over the PE council authority! How long before Rwanda-type genocide and legalised murder of DA supporters and white farmers is instigated? Will the United Nations react in time to save us? Or should we organise to save ourselves? SANDY YOUNG

BIRDS OF A FEATHER

SO Jacob Zuma is in Zimbabwe, visiting that prime example of maladministration, mismanagement and misappropriation, giving credence to the adage, “Birds of a feather flock together”. ED

POLICE VAN TRANSPORTING FURNITURE

RE police cars used for shopping. On October 25 at 5.15pm I saw a police van being used to transport furniture at 13 2nd Avenue, Newton Park. EYES OPEN

SOMEONE MUST PAY FOR CCTV DEBACLE

R45-million allegedly paid to a supplier for camera and CCTV equipment NOT delivered for the non-operational IPTS bus system! It’s hard to believe such incompetence. Somebody laughed all the way to the bank, followed by well-timed resignations. Corruption galore at our metro! The state should go after all the role players in this self-enrichment saga. LINDANI MBUKA

PLEASE BAN FIREWORKS IN BAY

PLEASE, pretty please Mr Trollip, ban fireworks. RB

WHY is Guy Fawkes celebrated so avidly by some when it’s a purely colonial and apartheid event? JUST ASKING TO Sindile, who complained that the municipality allowed Guy Fawkes in Bluewater Bay. How can they disallow Guy Fawkes activity if they allow the slow slaughter of ailing livestock? NAT F

WHY do we celebrate the totally colonial Guy Fawkes? CAT

NO EMPATHY FOR HOSPITAL PATIENTS

THE Outspoken Thoughts article on state health system (The Herald, November 1) is one-sided. Obviously a celebrity gets different treatment. Why doesn’t the writer investigate the staff and general assistants’ negative attitude, ill-discipline and time management? I know, I am a patient in this unit. The staff have got no respect or empathy for their patients. The only shining star is their matron, who left. Can’t blame her – you can only take so much from uncontrollable staff and unions.

STOP IRREGULAR EXPENDITURE

ONLY a corrupt government will allow irregular expenditure to go unanswered. It’s taxpayers money, not ANC private funds. HENNIE NEL

WHO CARES ABOUT THE HORSES?

IN reply to M L Bosman. Racing might sell more newspapers etc, but what is the object? To make money for the owners and trainers, even the jockeys! Who gives a damn about the horses? CYNIC

THANKS AND MUCH APPRECIATED

EDDIE van Zyl from Courtyard Hotel PE. On behalf of all the golfers, for a wonderful day and everything you do for charity. MARIUS, BLUE BULL
