Farriagers for vino with a view

- Brett Adkins

IF IT’S a view you’re after, to accompany your sundowners, you would be hard pressed to find a more impressive take on Algoa Bay than one of the most comfortable decks in town.

The Farriagers bar (and restaurant) at Humewood’s Kelway Hotel opens out on to a spacious and lushly furnished sundeck which is simply made for a cool thirst-quencher at dusk as you soak in the sea breeze.

Slip into the large, cushiony couches and take in the vistas of Kings Beach, the harbour wall and beyond.

The bar itself has a definite Alpine ski lodge feel with its huge windows that stretch to the very top of the tapered-point rafters. But here locomotives are the central theme as murals take us back to the railroad day with images of grand steam engines.

As an ideal gathering spot for drinks with friends or as the opening act to a dinner outing at the adjacent Farriagers eatery, the venue offers a range of top-end spirits, wine labels, aperitifs, ciders and beers to match the mood like an ice cold Pilsner Urquell .

A choice of fine liqueurs completes this picture – so decadent after-dinner nightcaps are definitely worth a shot.

With its gentle ambience and warmth, this sundowner spot offers a calmer alternative to the other pubs in this promenade area.
