Quota to blame for loss?

- R A Hill, Greenacres, Port Elizabeth

THE form of the Warriors during this current season has been very encouraging. In saying this, it must also be acknowledged that, in general, the other teams in the domestic competitions have been weakened by the absence of their Protea players.

The Warriors had a few close encounters in the matches leading up to the final of the T20 and to be in a final for the first time in many years was commendable. However, it must be accepted that to play a final against teams that had been played against very recently, it needed the team to be fine-tuned and also to come up with some different tactics!

Having won the toss and restricting the Titans to a score of below 150 was a good effort. But to give away some 14 runs in the last over was not smart cricket.

The Warriors lost a wicket in the first over and two of their prime batsmen were out very cheaply, which put the team on the back foot. When Colin Ackermann and Christiaan Jonker were out, after a brief partnership, they were losing the momentum.

The end result is now history, but one must ask why a player on loan was in the team, when personnel of the calibre of Andrew Birch and Simon Harmer were cooling their heels in the dugout?

Did not see much of Qaasim Adams under the helmet, but was it once more the Mbalula quota system that cost the team the match and also the recognition of winning a competition after being in the wilderness for almost 10 years?
