Big prize boost for PE tournament

WITH a total prize purse of R45 000, the Mofa Easter soccer tournament promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The winning team will walk away with R18 000, a floating trophy and gold medals.

The runners-up will pocket R13 000 and medals, the losing semifinalists R5 000 each and the quarterfinalists R1 000 each.

There will also be individual awards for best goalkeeper, player, manager, coach, match official and most disciplined team at the Build It/Big Daddy’s/Heineken event.

“Last year we had 32 teams taking part,” tournament director Mzimkhulu Fina said.

“With the attractive prize money, we are expecting 40 from across the metro and surrounding areas this year. Each team will be allowed five guest players in their squad of 23, but only three will be allowed on the field at the same time,” Fina said.

In addition to the senior tournament, juniors U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17 will also be competing in their own tournament.

Entries close on Saturday, with the draw taking place at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Complex, NU 4B, at 5.30pm on April 4 for seniors and April 6 for juniors.

The registration for seniors costs R600, for Mofa affiliates, and R700 for teams from other areas. For juniors, it is R50, for Mofa affiliates, and R100 for teams from other areas.

Player registration must be finalised by April 10.

Last year, the tournament was won by Subs with Dynamos (Zafa) as runners-up.

Teams can deposit their entry fee directly into the Mofa account at Absa, account number 656616792, using the club name as reference.

Fina said security would be tight at the event, with visible policing by the SAPS and other law-enforcement agencies.
